Traffic Calming - Woodward Avenue
The Town of Milton is potentially installing speed cushions along Woodward Avenue between Martin Street and Ontario Street North .
Over the last few years, a number of studies were undertaken to assess the need for traffic calming measures on Woodward Avenue. The results showed that additional measures warranted consideration.
As part of the Town’s Traffic Calming Policy, 51 per cent of residents directly impacted by the traffic calming measure must be in support for the measure to be implemented. In this case, 51 per cent of residents with direct residential frontage along Woodward Avenue between Martin Street and Ontario Street North must be in support.
How you can participate:
Residents living within the neighbourhood or on the affected road are encouraged to watch the virtual presentation of the proposed Woodward Avenue speed cushions.
After viewing the presentation, residents with direct frontage on Woodward Avenue are asked to complete the survey below indicating support or no support of the proposed speed cushions
Comments and survey responses will be accepted until June 28, 2024.

Share Thank you for this, a much needed step. Once drivers come down woodward and hit the first speed bump they WILL turn in front of my house (187 riverpalce) and speed on the back streets where quite a few families with kids play outside. Volume and speed studies have been conducted on Broadway Avenue, Mountainview Drive, and George Street. If the proposed traffic calming measures are implemented on Woodward Avenue, staff will conduct post-implementation studies there to assess their effectiveness. Additionally, staff will conduct traffic volume and speed studies on Broadway Avenue, Mountainview Drive, and George Street to determine if these side streets are being used to bypass the speed cushions on Woodward Avenue. If these studies reveal increased traffic volume or speeding, staff will evaluate whether traffic calming measures are warranted. We will publish the post-implementation study results in the spring of 2025 so residents can see how traffic has changed in the neighborhood.

Share I am curious as to why was it decided that there would be speed cushions implemented rather than stop signs? I may be mistaken, but I believe that stop signs at Mountainview, Court and Elm would calm traffic significantly, as well as prevent people from using Broadway, Court, George and Mountainview as a means to avoid these humps. I would imagine it would cost significantly less to implement as well, with less future maintenance required. Adding a 3 way stop at Court and Woodward would also make it much safer for residents looking to turn onto Woodward from Court as the Southwest corner is a blind spot until you are halfway onto Woodward. It could potentially be viewed as an additional safety measure. on Facebook Share I am curious as to why was it decided that there would be speed cushions implemented rather than stop signs? All-way stops are not considered to be a form a traffic calming. All-way stops are placed when warrants are fulfilled. It is also important to note that all-way stops are intended to control the right-of-way at an intersection, and are not to be used as a speed control device. Studies show that un-warranted all-way stops can lead to poor driver compliance, as drivers become accustomed to not meeting opposing traffic at the intersection.

Share Woodward is a major thoroughfare from Martin to Ontario. I don't see how traffic on Mountainview or Broadway would increase if they put some something on Woodward. Would that not deter some from using Woodward altogether? I spend a lot of time driving in Burlington and Toronto. I notice they have 30 km zones in calming zones. Why not make Woodward 30 or at least a 40. 50 easily becomes 60+. A section of Main Street in Hamilton is a 40! Lets do something , so tired of people flying by @ 60km + from Martin to Ontario. on Facebook Share Woodward is a major thoroughfare from Martin to Ontario. The Town of Milton did complete a 40km/h pilot area within the boundaries of Derry Road, Regional Road 25, Louis St Laurent Avenue and Bronte Street South. Staff undertook before and after studies to determine how effective lowering the speed limits on certain roadways would be.
Traffic staff are submitting a report to Council on June 24th, 2024 with our recommendations to the proposal of 40km/h roadways. If you wish to read this report, it will be available on the Town's website after June 24th, 2024.

Share Due to the on street parking during the day, especially between 8 to 9 a.m & 3 to 4 p.m., when Woodward is jammed due to parents dropping their kid(s) off for school, traffic barely moves. Parents using my driveway and blocking it off you can work on that. I haven't noticed very many speeders since I've been here. Share I've been on Woodward near Court St North for about 32 years now and very, very rarely have I seen police enforcing the posted speed limits. Fairly recently, community safety zone signage was placed along Woodward from about Elm St to Martin St indicating "speed fines doubled" but still, there's never any police presence to enforce the posted limit. To my mind, speed calming cushions won't deter many from continuing to exceed the limit. If you want to get their attention, hit 'em where it hurts - in their pocket books. on Facebook Share I've been on Woodward near Court St North for about 32 years now and very, very rarely have I seen police enforcing the posted speed limits. TalkingtoMilton asked 6 months agoWoodward Avenue was by-lawed and signed as a community safety zone earlier this year. Since the signage has been installed, staff have requested police enforcement along this roadway. Police presence is a temporary solution as police can not be present all the time.
The Town of Milton currently does not have Automated Speed Enforcement (speed cameras). This road safety program is currently being discussed. Staff provided a report to Council titled (DS-050-23 Supporting Safe Roads in Milton 2023 Update) regarding an Automated Speed Enforcement update. Share Hello, I live on Broadway, a street with young families that have have young children. I find the nature of our street (straight, no stop signs) and location, being off of Ontario St. No, that a lot of cars come down our street very quickly. I am in favour of the proposed street cushions on Woodward, but my concerns are this will further encourage traffic down Broadway, as well as George & Mountainview. My question is, would you consider similar traffic calming measures on Broadway? Or perhaps a 2 way stop sign (east/west) at Elm Street? Share I have lived on Broadway Ave for over 50 years. Yes - there has been more traffic over the years but nothing that I would consider a problem yet - in my view. If the speed cushions on Woodward are installed my concern is that Broadway, Mountainview and George St will get increased traffic as drivers try and avoid Woodward. These drivers will likely then be driving over the speed limit on these other streets. If this were to happen I would not be happy or in favour that Broadway would then have to get speed cushions as result of this change on Woodward. The problem is just being pushed from one street onto others. Has the Town considered putting up a speed camera(s) that will issue a ticket to the driver that is speeding over the limit? When you hit the pocket book people will learn to slow down. on Facebook Share I have lived on Broadway Ave for over 50 years.
